Beltline Atlanta: User Opinions on Improvements and Issues (2026)

The Atlanta Beltline, a quarter-century-old urban redevelopment project, has sparked a heated debate among residents. Amit Kamma, a transportation planner and Yale University graduate, conducted an unscientific survey along the Beltline trail to gauge public opinion. The results reveal a divided and diverse community, with varying wishes and complaints from Eastside and Westside trail users.

Kamma's survey, conducted over two days in late July, yielded 153 responses, with 114 wishes and 79 complaints. The most common complaint category was e-bikes/scooters, with speed and user etiquette cited as major concerns. Conversely, the most common wish categories were bike lanes, rail, and water access.

One of the most striking findings was the significant difference between Eastside and Westside trail respondents. Westside users overwhelmingly desired rail, while Eastside users focused on congestion and the lack of separate lanes for bikes and scooters. Water access was a less polarizing issue, with about 10% of respondents expressing a desire for better water fountain access.

Surprisingly, housing only came up four times, with Westside respondents lamenting the absence of affordable housing. Two Westside respondents even mentioned Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens as a complaint. On the Eastside, the desire for more bars was expressed, with one respondent appearing less than sober.

Kamma acknowledges the survey's limitations, noting its unscientific nature and small sample size. However, he believes the findings provide valuable insights into Atlanta's pulse, especially as the Beltline loop nears completion. The survey highlights the diverse opinions and concerns of residents, offering a glimpse into the future of this transformative urban project.
